About OpenOrigins

OpenOrigins is building a global trust layer for the internet’s media content, ensuring we can always tell what is real and what is fake. As low-cost, highly-convincing synthetic media saturates the internet, it becomes increasingly difficult to discern truth from misinformation.

OpenOrigins believes that content provenance via decentralised trust is the answer to reinstating believability back to media. We secure future content (establishing proof of origin for newly captured media) and protect the past (safeguarding media archives).

Founded in 2021, we are venture-backed and preparing to scale rapidly to tackle this critical challenge. Our co-founders, Manny Ahmed and Ari Abelson, bring deep expertise in blockchain, cybersecurity, and scaling high-growth startups.

Location: We are hybrid-remote. Preference for people in: London and San Francisco.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious Junior Researcher to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge research in digital provenance, media authenticity, blockchain, and cybersecurity. This role is ideal for someone passionate about investigating emerging technologies, analysing industry trends, and supporting product innovation through rigorous research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on provenance, media security, blockchain, and cybersecurity trends, including literature reviews and industry analysis.
  • Analyse regulatory landscapes and technological advancements that impact media authenticity and digital trust.
  • Collaborate with product teams to translate research findings into actionable insights.
  • Assist in developing whitepapers, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support grant applications and contribute to academic or industry research initiatives.
  • Engage with external research networks, industry experts, and academic partners to stay at the forefront of innovation.

Who are you

  • You’re ambitious and hard-working, and will succeed at whatever you put your mind to.
  • You are intellectually curious, proactive, and detail-oriented.
  • You have a strong analytical mindset and can synthesize complex information into clear insights.
  • You are an effective communicator, able to present research findings concisely and persuasively.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment and are eager to learn about emerging technologies.
  • You have a track record of exceptional performance, whether it’s in academia, work, sport, or whatever else you’ve put your mind to.

Qualifications, skills & experience

  • We like to hire on ability, motivation and aptitude rather than only on past experience. Background is important, but it is not enough by itself.
  • What makes you a great fit:
    • A postgraduate degree (Research Master’s or PhD) in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Information Security, Mathematics, Digital Media, or a related discipline.
    • Experience conducting research in technical or industry domains related to media security, blockchain, or cybersecurity.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce research reports and presentations.
    • Ability to analyse and interpret industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies.
    • Familiarity with data analysis tools, research methodologies, and technical frameworks.
    • You care deeply about the OpenOrigins mission.
  • What makes you stand out:
    • Previous experience in an academic, industry, or policy research setting focused on digital provenance, media security, or blockchain.
    • Understanding of cryptographic principles and how they apply to digital authenticity.
    • Exposure to cybersecurity frameworks, risk assessment methodologies, or media verification tools.
    • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks surrounding digital trust and emerging provenance standards.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. Your application will be reviewed without attention to sex, marital status, race, nationality or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, working practices, medical history, neurodiversity or any other personal or protected characteristics. Studies show that women and people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply for jobs when they don’t meet every criteria - if you’re not sure, send an application and let us be the judge.
