About the Role
Join our senior leadership team as Dispute Counsel in a rapidly expanding fintech environment. You will be overseeing litigation/dispute, employment claims, regulatory enforcement, and investigation matters across Hong Kong and international jurisdictions. Reporting directly to the Head of Legal, you’ll play a pivotal role in minimizing legal exposure and manage external legal spend while ensuring that litigation strategies align with broader business objectives.
Responsibilities
- Case Management & Strategy: Oversee the lifecycle of disputes from initial demand letters to final resolution, architect comprehensive litigation strategies by conducting rigorous merit assessments and risk-reward analyses to inform critical "settle vs. litigate" decisions, and align dispute resolution outcomes with broader corporate objectives and brand reputation management.
- External Counsel Management: Select, instruct, and manage external law firms, and ensure external counsel to provide high-quality, commercially-minded advice while strictly adhering to budgets and fee arrangements.
- Dispute Prevention & Risk Advisory: Analyze recurring litigation themes to identify operational gaps and advise business units on how to adjust contracts or internal processes to avoid future disputes.
- Internal Investigations: Lead or support internal audits and investigations into potential misconduct, whistleblower complaints, or compliance breaches.
- Discovery & Document Retention: Manage large-scale document reviews efficiently, minimizing the time and cost associated with data production in complex litigation.
- Settlement Negotiations: Lead or participate in mediation and direct settlement negotiations to resolve disputes efficiently.
Qualifications
- Education: Qualified lawyer with full admission to practice law in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States, or another Tier-1 jurisdiction (e.g., Singapore, Australia, or Canada), holding an LLB or equivalent legal degree from a top-tier university.
- Experience: At least 5-8 years of progressive experience in reputable law firms, in-house counsel, or similar roles within the financial services, payments, crypto, or fintech sectors.
- Solid experience in commercial litigation, arbitration, and regulatory enforcement. Start-up experience is advantageous, especially demonstrable experience in handling complex legal matters in fast-paced and exacting situations.
- Experience and knowledge of crypto products, regulations and transactions are advantageous.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated leadership in managing teams and cross-functional collaborations, with superior strategic thinking, risk assessment, and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional research, analytical, drafting, and communication skills are required.
- Ability to manage multiple workstreams and perform effectively under sustained workloads.
- Excellent written and spoken English and Chinese. The ability to speak Mandarin is a must.
Preferred Skills
- A deep passion for the crypto and payments industries, combined with the ability to start immediately and thrive in a fast-paced, senior-level setting.
