Role Purpose

Own risk strategy, decisioning and the framework for identifying and managing material business exposures. You will combine strong knowledge of risk models with practical judgement, helping leadership understand how much risk the business is taking and when to intervene. You will lead the risk team and work with Finance, Product, Engineering and Compliance to support growth within approved risk appetite.

Key Responsibilities

  • Risk appetite and governance. Propose risk appetite, limits, key risk indicators and escalation thresholds for executive approval. Maintain a consolidated risk register, assign control owners and report material exposures, breaches and remediation to leadership.
  • Fraud and payment risk strategy. Design controls for account takeover, card fraud, scams, transaction abuse and partner or merchant risks where relevant. Set risk-based transaction limits, review rules and intervention policies across onboarding, payments and transfers.
  • Risk models and decisioning. Lead risk rules, scorecards and model development with Data and Engineering. Set standards for data quality, testing, backtesting, deployment and monitoring. Arrange independent challenge or validation proportionate to model materiality, with documented changes and rollback procedures.
  • Exposure assessment. Work with Finance and Treasury to quantify settlement, liquidity, counterparty and concentration exposures, including stablecoin issuer, custody, banking and payment partner dependencies. Define limits and early warnings; Finance and Treasury retain responsibility for funding and cash execution.
  • Monitoring and performance. Build dashboards connecting losses, chargebacks, approval rates, false declines, manual reviews and exposure utilisation. Identify emerging patterns and evaluate control effectiveness against both loss prevention and customer impact.
  • Contingency planning. Develop and exercise scenarios for fraud spikes, stablecoin depegging, partner outages and settlement or withdrawal pressure. Define triggers, authorised restrictions, escalation and recovery criteria with accountable business and technical owners.
  • Product and partner assessment. Assess new products, markets, corridors and material partners before launch. Translate risk findings into practical requirements and monitor residual risks, dependencies and exceptions after launch.
  • Team and cross-functional leadership. Build a capable risk team and prioritise its tools, data and resources. Coordinate fraud signals with Compliance, which owns AML and sanctions case handling, and Security, which owns technical defence and cyber incident response.

Qualifications

  • 8-10 years in risk management, fraud strategy or risk analytics within payments, fintech, digital assets or financial services, including 3+ years leading a risk function or substantial risk team.
  • Proven ownership of risk strategies and models in production. Strong understanding of scorecards, statistical or machine learning models, evaluation metrics, model drift, false positives and model governance.
  • Ability to identify and quantify material exposures, translate them into limits and controls, and explain stress scenarios and residual risks to executive management.
  • Practical knowledge of payment lifecycles, card fraud, chargebacks, account takeover and cross-border transaction risks. Able to assess stablecoin and digital asset risks or demonstrate closely transferable expertise.
  • Strong analytical skills, including SQL and the ability to interrogate data and challenge modelling assumptions. Experience partnering with data scientists and engineers to implement and monitor decisions.
  • Evidence of sound judgement during a major risk event, including escalation, containment and follow-through. Able to balance commercial goals with approved risk appetite and clearly challenge decisions when necessary.
  • Degree in mathematics, statistics, finance, economics or a related discipline, or equivalent experience. Professional English communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with stablecoin payments, digital asset custody dependencies, card programmes or settlement and liquidity risk.
  • Experience strengthening risk governance and modelling capabilities in a business undergoing rapid growth; Mandarin Chinese communication skills.
